Although the film is based on the first novel, “A Princess of Mars,” and the series itself is informally known as “John Carter of Mars,” why is the movie just being called “John Carter”? While it was first announced as “John Carter of Mars,” marketing research apparently determined that mention of the word “Mars” turned off a large (mostly female) chunk of potential audiences, so away it went. The decision has proved to be a controversial one with genre fans familiar with the material. After all, what does “John Carter” mean to anyone who doesn’t have at least a passing knowledge of Burroughs’ books?
